As we move into autumn, it’s important that businesses and homeowners alike look out for any signs of pests moving into properties. Specifically at this time of year, it’s important to keep an eye out for rodents – rats and mice.
This is because as the weather gets colder they will often seek refuge in warmer locations – and our homes and businesses can provide the perfect spot for a mouse or rat to set up home to ride out the cold of the winter.
In fact, as we move towards Halloween, it’s especially important to consider pest control. That’s because what look like fun seasonal decorations can quickly turn into a nasty trick – namely rats and mice see your jack’o lantern as the perfect feast.
Therefore leaving carved pumpkins outside of your home or business can act as a beacon for pests, inviting them to explore your premises and perhaps to stick around in the hope of another easy meal.
Rather than end up in a situation where you need to call in pest control (although we’re always here if you need assistance!), it’s best to consider pest prevention methods before it’s too late.
When it comes to rodents, aside from ensuring that you don’t leave pumpkins outdoors, make sure that your bins are properly sealed and not providing a food source for inquisitive rodents. Also take the time to check your property for any potential points of entry for a rat or mouse.
According to the British Pest Control Association, rats need a gap of just 15mm to get into a space, while mice need a gap that is no bigger than a pencil eraser! So, it’s worth doing a thorough check to make sure you don’t have any small gaps that a rodent could squeeze through.
If you notice any signs of gnawing on wires, wood or even brickwork around your home or business premises, call in a pest control expert to take a look and help you work out whether you’ve already got a problem, or whether preventative measures will stop it from escalating as the weather gets colder.
