As the weather has warmed up over the last few weeks, no doubt many of you have seen a significant uptick in wasp populations. 

This is because queen wasps begin working on their nests during the spring and come the summer, hundreds of eggs are being produced and thousands of adult wasps are busying about, building the nest and feeding the grubs.

Of all the summer pests, wasps are perhaps the most feared because of their nasty stings, which can be very painful and can cause allergic reactions. 

A lot of this fear, however, comes from the misconception that wasps will attack unprovoked but this is typically not the case and, in fact, wasps usually only sting when they feel threatened.

If the nest is somewhere unobtrusive where the wasps aren’t a danger to anyone, it’s perhaps best to leave it alone - particularly when you factor in that wasps are increasingly important pollinators in the face of declining bee populations. Wasps are also good for the garden as they feed on other insects, so they help keep other pests under control.
